Seeking Students to Pilot Program

We’re looking for a small class, homeschool, or scout group to pilot a live, online lesson with New Pioneers. Designed for upper elementary students, the lesson compares the lifestyles of early pioneers to our own and considers the environmental effects of each. A classic game of Oregon Trail is also included!

The learning experience has been adapted from Project Learning Tree, an award-winning environmental education program, and is correlated to Next Generation Science Standards. Interested? Contact whitney@newpioneersfsf.org or (859) 336-5070.

Battery Recycling Returns

New Pioneers has reinstated our household battery recycling program! The following types of batteries can be dropped off at our office from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday:
-Alkaline Batteries
-Nickel Cadmium Batteries (NiCd)
-Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries (NiMH)
-Lithium Metal batteries (less than 25g of lithium content) *
-Lithium Ion Batteries (less than 300 Wh rated capacity) *

*Most consumer-style lithium metal and li-ion batteries fall within these size limitations, including lithium metal AA & AAA cells, lithium metal button cells, and rechargeable li-ion batteries used in laptops, cell phones, and power tools.

Member Spotlight

✨ Kris O’Daniel

We’re shining the light on Kris O’Daniel, who has been a member since the early days of New Pioneers. Kris owns Zelma Farm in Washington County and is a dedicated solar advocate and talented classic whistler. As a matter of fact, you may have heard her at an Empty Bowl Supper!

Why did you join New Pioneers?
I was impressed with Sister Claire’s initiative to gather broad community interests, identify shared values and resources, and  have useful and great conversations across the board.

What is your favorite New Pioneers memory?
One of my favorite events is the Green Festival. To me, this is an event that naturally belongs in a rural community. It’s about REAL stuff, not the fake stuff. It presents a lot of ideas and alternative ways.

What does “sustainability” mean to you?
“Build to last,” whether it is a farm operation, construction, a company, or a project. Building with respect for and protecting the environment and people. This is generally a longer-lasting and more economically successful and sustainable approach.

Share a sustainability tip!
Non-recyclable packaging and wrapping is an enormous environmental problem. People can easily play a pivotal role by purchasing products that are packed in recyclable material or not packed at all. If plastic bags are needed, try 100% compostable bags instead. They are available at Kroger and come in different sizes, ranging from 6 liters to 13 gallons.

Recommend your favorite local product or place.
I love the local ceramic producers’ beautiful work. They are super creative and experiment with a variety of clays and fascinating colors. They are always ready to fulfill individual requests. I also love to walk in the creek, at the farm’s back, under new and old trees – a small part of unspoiled nature, the way it was meant to thrive.

We thank Kris for sharing her story and wisdom. Join her, and so many others, in our New Pioneers family by becoming a member today. No extra costs, no fees, no differences in your shopping experience – except that 0.5% of your eligible purchases are donated to New Pioneers.
